Reclaiming Histories - New Canadian Films on Art
until May 2, 2021 @ Kunstverein Braunschweig
For over 35 years, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and her company Rosas create dance pieces that are deeply engaged in music and composition. In particular Bach’s music has been a continuous passion of the Belgian choreographer.
Filmmakers Olivia Rochette and Gerard-Jan Claes have already collaborated with De Keersmaeker in earlier projects; they know the choreographer’s work, and so they are well equipped for the difficult task to film a documentary about the rehearsal process of her dance piece “Mitten wir im Leben sind/Bach6Cellosuiten”, a collaboration with cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras. Without narration or explanatory commentary, only through skilled camera work and thoughtful editing, they come close to the essence of the choreographer’s work. De Keersmaeker’s choreographies are a permanent search for precision, geometry, and organization of space and time. "Mitten" allows us an intimate insight into De Keersmaeker’s artistic process and her continuous fascination with Bach’s music.
Olivia Rochette und Gerard-Jan Claes
Rochette and Claes studied film together at the KASK / School of Arts Ghent. Their graduation work "Because We Are Visual" (2010) allows the viewer to discover the world of public video journals. It was shown at national and international film festivals such as the International Film Festival Rotterdam, International Documentary Festival Amsterdam, and was exhibited in museums such as S.M.A.K. (Ghent, Belgium) and MAC’s (Grand-Hornu, Belgium). In 2012 they finished "Rain", a documentary about the transmission of Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s contemporary choreography "Rain" to the Ballet de l’Opéra national de Paris. The documentary had its international premiere at IDFA. From 2013 to 2016, Rochette and Claes were artists in residence at the Beursschouwburg in Brussels. In 2016 they closed their residency with a screening of "Grands travaux" at the Beursschouwburg as part of the Kunstenfestivaldesarts. "Grands travaux" had its international premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam. They are currently working on a new film, Kind Hearts, produced by Accattone films.
