Diaspora experiences, essayistic narratives and Asian subjectivity
Japanese literary critic Takeuchi Yoshimi considered Asia’s modernity as an experience of the invasion of Europe. For him Asia had become merely a subject of modernity, split from being a subjectivity itself. Taking the writings of Takeuchi Yoshimi as a starting point to discuss the opposition between Asia as subject of Western modernism versus a subjectivity of its own, the lecture will show how it may be possible to re-address this conflict and explore the issue of Asian subjectivity based on diaspora experiences, expressed through essayistic narratives.
